Dorothy BLACK Born 1963 -
Since studying at Edinburgh College of Art, Dorothy Black has exhibited widely within Scotland and the UK. Her work focuses upon the female figure, yet tends to avoid the gentle sentiments commonly associated with this gender. Controlled contrasts of hard and soft are employed to create a visual play across the surface of the image, while the minute details of pattern and dress are carefully delineated. The figures generally involve a degree of contortion or pose, adding an element of tension to these images and enforcing the visible human aspect. This focus on the overall figure rather than the individual person is heightened too by an avoidance of the face, as Black prefers to avoid over-specifying her enigmatic subjects.
