William Hanna CLARKE 1882 - 1924

Biography

William Hanna Clarke sadly had little time to expand and develop his artistic career which was cut short in 1924 by a fatal accident

however the works which do remain show a clear consistency of subject and style, as Clarke focused upon country scenes mainly in Kirkcudbright and Stirlingshire

Midsummer here also shows another of his predilections - that of painting in the lighter seasons, when the landscape was at its best in full bloom

due to his settling at Kirkcudbright, the inevitable influence of the Kirkcudbright School and artist's colony is apparent in Clarke's work, however it is impossible to guess in which direction his painting would have moved in later years
